The Leadership Landscape in 2026: What’s Driving Executive Priorities

As we move through the opening months of 2026, the leadership landscape is being fundamentally reshaped by technological transformation, aggressive growth targets, and evolving talent requirements. Our recent survey of leaders across the sectors we serve reveals three critical shifts that are defining executive priorities for the year ahead.

AI and Digital Transformation Dominate the Agenda

Over half of the leaders we surveyed (56%) cite AI implementation and digital transformation as their top priorities for 2026. This isn’t surprising given the pace of technological change, but what’s notable is the consistency of this theme across every sector, from financial services to consumer brands, from industrial tech to private equity portfolio companies.

29% of leaders identify AI implementation and transformation as a critical focus, whilst 25% are prioritising broader digital transformation and innovation initiatives. These aren’t separate workstreams; they’re interconnected challenges that require new approaches to leadership, strategy, and execution.

However, many organisations are underestimating the leadership shift required to embed AI capability successfully. Tech investment and innovation are essential, but success is intrinsically linked to leadership. It’s not just about the technology, it’s about having leaders who can drive the organisational change required to realise the value.

The message is clear: leaders who can’t navigate AI transformation risk being left behind.

Growth and Scaling Remain Non-Negotiable

Despite economic uncertainty, growth remains paramount across our client base. 27% of leaders cite scaling operations and go-to-market strategies as a top priority, whilst 29% identify growth and scaling challenges as their biggest obstacle heading into 2026.

These leaders, whether running investor-backed portfolio companies or high-growth corporates, are managing a complex balancing act: accelerating growth whilst maintaining profitability, expanding operations whilst controlling costs, and pursuing hypergrowth whilst building sustainable infrastructure. As one respondent noted, their biggest challenge is “cost-cutting whilst doing a growth turnaround,” a sentiment that resonates across many businesses currently.

The traditional playbook of choosing between growth and efficiency no longer applies. Today’s leaders need to deliver both simultaneously. We’re seeing demand increase for what we call “hybrid leaders”, those who can navigate both growth and cost-efficiency agendas in an ever-changing global landscape, bringing certainty, clarity, and consistency to their organisations.

AI is Fundamentally Changing Leadership Requirements

Perhaps the most significant finding from our survey is how AI is reshaping what organisations need from their leaders, a pattern we’re observing across all six sectors. 53% of respondents say AI is requiring different skill sets in traditional leadership positions, not just creating new technical roles, but fundamentally changing what’s expected of established C-suite positions.

An additional 29% report that AI is accelerating digital transformation timelines, compressing the window for strategic planning and execution. Only 6% of leaders say AI isn’t significantly impacting their leadership needs yet, a figure that’s likely to shrink further throughout 2026.

The executives who thrived in 2020 may not have the capabilities needed for 2026. Whether we’re speaking with technology CEOs or private equity partners, the need for leaders who can combine strategic vision with technical fluency is universal. In an environment shaped by inflationary pressures, constrained capital markets, and shifting consumer behaviour, leadership decisions can have a disproportionate impact on resilience and growth.

Talent Acquisition Emerges as a Critical Enabler

Underpinning these priorities is a talent challenge that transcends sectors. 18% of leaders cite sourcing valuable people, upgrading executive teams, or finding board members with fresh perspectives as their biggest challenge for 2026.

This isn’t about headcount, it’s about finding transformational leaders who can navigate unprecedented complexity. As one survey respondent put it, they’re seeking “first-time NEDs that can provide fresh new perspectives to the board,” a recognition that experience alone isn’t sufficient when the landscape is changing this rapidly.

Other critical challenges include cross-functional alignment (18% of responses) and managing financial pressures during periods of transition (12%), particularly for organisations navigating exits or portfolio optimisation.

What This Means for Leadership in 2026

The data from leaders across these six sectors paints a picture of a leadership landscape in transition. Executives are being asked to deliver aggressive growth whilst implementing transformational technology, to build new capabilities whilst managing costs, and to make strategic bets on AI whilst maintaining operational excellence.

The leaders who will thrive in this environment won’t be those with the most impressive CVs or the longest tenure in their sectors. They’ll be the ones who can think differently about digital opportunities, who can upskill their teams at pace, and who can make smart decisions about where to invest in AI for maximum business impact.

The traditional approach to executive search, recycling known names and familiar faces, won’t deliver the transformational leadership required. Success in 2026 demands fresh perspectives, new capabilities, and leaders who are already navigating the intersection of AI, growth, and organisational transformation.

The question isn’t whether AI will reshape your leadership requirements. The question is whether you’ll upgrade your leadership fast enough to keep pace.
